The Squaw and the Papoose

One instance of her (Delia Millicent Reed's) loving charity for those in need happened when I was a little girl.  rather was always kind to the Indians, often allowing them to camp in our meadow and feeding their horses for days.

Among one band of Indians was an old squaw that had a little baby about a year old.  She came to mother and said her papoose was hungry, that its mother had died and left it for her to care for.  Mother Fed the poor little thing and gave it a bath, then went to a trunk and took some of my baby clothes and dressed it.

Some years later she saw Mother and told her how pleased she was for the way mother had treated and took care of the little one.  She reminded mother how the little baby cried and wanted to stay with her instead of going with the old Indian squaw.  the old squaw said to mother, "You heap good squaw.  gave my papoose heap eat and dress."
