Vessa the Teacher

In the fall of 1926, while Vernon was in Holland, Vessa returned to Gila College, as a freshman and vice-president of the student body. She was also school librarian, so between her work, her classes, and the student government, she was very busy. During the school year she decided that instead of returning to Gila College the next year she would take the state teacher’s examination and try to get a teaching job. At that time, one only needed to have graduated from high school, have the desire, and be able to pass the state teacher’s exam.

She did pass and was offered a school at Redlands, which was between Glenbar and Ft. Thomas. She was also offered a job in Franklin teaching the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades in their two room/two teacher school. She accepted the job in Franklin and in the fall of 1927 moved to Franklin and boarded with Vernon’s parents. She made $125.00/month. She enjoyed the children very much. She also taught band to about 10 kids from the various grades. Vessa not only played the violin but also played the French Horn and drums.

She taught again a second year and had a substitute arranged for the month she was to take off to meet Vernon when he was released from his mission. She finished out the school year while Vernon worked for his father in the store.
