Probably the story that influenced me, Raymond McGrath, most during my teenage years was told to me by my father, James Vernon McGrath. The events took place about 1942 while Spencer W. Kimball was still President of Mt Graham Stake. President Kimball, my father and the other counselor in the Stake Presidency had been in the El Paso, Texas area holding meetings with members as well as the leadership of the El Paso Ward. The members of the Stake Presidency had left Duncan early on a Saturday morning with meetings schduled for Saturday afternoon and evening and all day Sunday. It would be a long, tiring weekend for the three of them. Sunday evening finally arrived and all meetings had been concluded and they were now headed back to Duncan to let Dad off and then President Kimball and the other counselor would go on to Safford. Dad always did most of the driving on their trips and this time was no exception. Dad said they left El Paso headed for Las Cruces and arrived there in good shape. Dad related that the next time he remembered anything they were driving under the old railroad bridge in Lordsburg. They had driven 52 miles with both President Kimball and the other counselor sound asleep and apparently although Dad was driving he did not remember it at all. It bothered Dad for a long time until President Kimball was called as the President of the Church. Dad then realized there was another power watching over President Kimball.
