While also helping care for her invalid mother, Laura gave birth to their first baby, Florence, on July 13, 1905. To their great sorrow, Florence on lived about one hour.
Their second child came September 14, 1906. Laura was with her sister in Manassa, Colorado, for the arrival of the baby, James Vernon. Both she and the new baby did well and in six weeks she was back home, glad for the new burden. Vernon brought great joy to his parents and also brought them a wonderful posterity. Vernon lived to be 66 years old, passing away December 13, 1072.
On November 22, 1909, their third child was born, a girl they named Delilah Elizabeth. She was a very promising child who brought more joy and comfort to their home. She seemed healthy, but in early 1916, she developed heart trouble. To Laura’s great sorrow, on April 17, 1916, Delilah died from what Vernon called “leakage of the heart.”
