During my school days, I took music lessons from Ada Packer, on the piano, and from Otilio Reyes and Delia Romney, on the violin. I also took dancing lessons from an instructor in Phoenix while my father was in the legislature. I am sorry to say that I was completely immune to all of it--nothing every took.
Evelyn wrote the following in a tribute to her dad:
Everyone knew that Vernon McGrath never sang in Church, but no one knew that when we would go on deliveries on the Standard Oil gas truck with him we sang all kinds of songs together. Two songs that I particularly remember are "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain" and "The Bear Went Over the Mountain."
